At DAMC, we are dedicated to the special needs of cats.  As a “Cat Friendly Practice“,  we’ve taken steps to create a soothing low-stress environment for the cats who come in for care.

Cat vet in Dunedin

Most cats just need to see their veterinarians for preventive care. It is recommended that cats come in for check-ups twice per year. Cats age faster than humans do, so their health status can change within a relatively short period of time. Early detection leads to early cure/resolution of most diseases, and the only path to early detection is regular veterinary evaluation. You can make regular veterinary assessment as easy as possible for your cat by seeking out a cat only veterinary practice.

Dental Care

Regular veterinary examinations are especially important in preventing dental disease, since cats rarely show outward signs of even serious painful dental disease.

Giving your cat a weekly gum massage helps keep gums healthy and prevents tooth loss. Using a cotton swab, rub the area where the teeth and gums meet. If the gums are red or there’s any bleeding, it could be gingivitis, and your cat may need veterinary treatment.  Chew toys and oral gels, along with specifically formulated dental treats and food can slow the formation of tartar and avoid the onset of dental disease. Cats should never, under any circumstances, have their teeth cleaned with human toothpaste.

Brushing your cat’s teeth daily, with a specially designed toothbrush and a pet dentifrice is the best way of preventing dental calculus.  Many pets will tolerate this after a gradual introduction period. Other dental hygiene methods such as dental gels, rinses and chews may be helpful if brushing is not a practical alternative for your pet.

Our state-of-the-art digital radiography and ultrasound equipment means rapid and accurate diagnosis and treatment of your pet.   Whether the issues are dental or internal, imaging takes the guesswork out of diagnosis.

Few practices can combine this level of accuracy and efficiency.

Microchip implants are also called radio frequency identification (RFID) tags. They are about the size of a grain of rice, and are passive.  The microchip implanted in your cat has no battery and no internal power source, so it sits inertly in the cat until it is read by a special microchip scanner.

We offer the most widely used microchip products to increase the chances of a safe recovery. The procedure is safe, quick and can be performed during any one of your pet’s scheduled visits to our office.
